Empowering minds, inspiring futures through mathematics! by Mr Vinay Nair

ABOUT THE TALK
Today, mathematics and its applications are finding their place in almost every field. However, many people may not realise how a strong foundation in mathematics can prepare students to choose the right courses in college, giving them an edge in pursuing exciting careers. Most students select their undergraduate courses based on advice from peers or family members. For instance, many bright students who pursue science in grades 11 and 12 often opt for engineering or medicine. However, these career choices are not always well-informed, largely due to a lack of information about alternative options and limited exposure to mathematical topics relevant to those fields. This is where it becomes important to introduce students to a wide range of subjects, demonstrate how mathematics is applied in different areas, and expose them to the various branches of mathematics. Additionally, it is crucial to nurture students who show a strong affinity for pure and applied mathematics.

In this talk, Mr Vinay Nair will present how the Raising A Mathematician (RAM) Foundation has partnered with top institutions to conduct various national-level programs. These programs focus both on broadening students’ exposure to diverse subjects and on identifying and empowering bright minds for an inspiring future.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Mr Vinay Nair is passionate about gifted education and K-12 mathematics education. He enjoys working with students from all across the country through his online and offline sessions, where he focuses on building reasoning skills, creativity, and inquiry through mathematical thinking. As the co-founder of the Raising a Mathematician Foundation, he has had the pleasure of mentoring both profoundly gifted students and those with a strong dislike for mathematics. He is equally thrilled to see his students pursue serious mathematics careers at institutions such as the Chennai Mathematical Institute, or apply the skills learned from studying mathematics productively in other areas of life.

Mr Nair is also the founder of Vichar Vatika, an organisation that focuses on the long-term goals of mathematics education. He has worked in curriculum development, inquiry-oriented education, and understanding the causes of math phobia in collaboration with NCERT. Vinay has a deep interest in the history of mathematics and India’s place in it. He has authored two books and an online course on Vedic mathematics for the Chinmaya International Foundation. He has also delivered two TEDx talks on two of his primary interests: ‘Goals of Mathematics Education’ and ‘History of Mathematics.’
