Research Associate Positions for a Village Study (Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu)

Sumit Mishra and Karthik Rao Cavale (Krea University) invite expressions of interest for up to four short-term research associate positions broadly in the fields of sociology and economics, with an emphasis on the socio-economy of Tamil Nadu.

The proposed research project is part of a broader effort to re-engage with the classical “village studies” tradition in Indian economics and sociology. In the months of October – December 2024, we will be conducting field research in a village in Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu. The village selected for our research was one of several villages surveyed in the 1960s as part of the village survey monograph series of the Census of India. Our purpose in studying this village is to examine patterns of structural transformation in a somewhat atypical context – a village where agriculture was not the main ‘traditional’ occupation. Research associates will participate in field research, which includes conducting a household survey and interviews with inhabitants in the selected village.

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in Economics, Sociology, or related disciplines
  • Willingness to carry out field research (prior experience with field research is desirable but not required)
  • Ability to communicate in Tamil

Remuneration:

  • A monthly salary of Rs. 60,000 (all inclusive) for the duration of employment
  • Expenses incurred on the field (food, travel, and lodging) will be covered from research funds.

Duration and Arrangements:

  • This is a short-term position for a maximum of three months (October – December 2024)
  • The research team will make all efforts to find reasonable lodging and boarding facilities in the vicinity of the field site.

Authorship of Research Outputs:

  • All members of the research team will have access to the data collected during the research. The primary investigators (Sumit and Karthik) of the project commit to allocating authorship of research outputs entirely based on intellectual contributions to the research.
