Sri City, 13 October 2019: …Around 15 students from the Social Outreach Club at Krea University visited ‘Boys Town’ - the Gummudipoondi Boys’ Home on 13 October 2019. A Rotary Club initiative, this facility houses 90 underprivileged boys from the surrounding areas. Accompanied by Dr. Rangashri Kishore, Dean of Library Services at Krea University, the students were picked up at the university gate in a Rotary Club bus and made their way through scenic fields.
A warm welcome awaited the team from Krea, who went prepared with games and prizes for the children. The boys were eagerly waiting and were so happy to see the team from Krea. After the introduction, the students conducted indoor and outdoor games for the children, based on their preference. Those who stayed indoor played antakshari, danced and sang with the Krea team, while a game of football was organized for those who wanted to play outdoors.
After about an hour of play, the children gathered in the main hall once again. Dr. Rangashri Kishore gave a heartfelt and thought-provoking speech about mental health awareness that was met with thunderous applause. She then proceeded to distribute awards to the academic toppers of the year and everyone cheered.
The students from Krea interacted with the boys and got to know about their academic interests. They decided to come up with a system where the kids can come to Krea and learn necessary skills such as computer programming, music etc., which the student volunteers could teach them. The team from Krea also visited the library and made note of all the books they required for various entrance exams.
Lunch was served in a beautiful airy dining hall, by the kids. The hours had just flown by, and soon it was time to say goodbye. The children did not want the Krea team to go, and the students had to say their goodbyes with a heavy heart. “However, this is not the end” says Satvika Char, Co-representative of the Social Outreach Club at Krea University, “If anything, it is just the beginning of a beautiful journey we plan to have with the children, and we are already planning and looking forward to the next visit!
