Sri City, November 21, 2019: …Dr Mathangi Krishnamurthy, an assistant professor of Anthropology in the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences at IIT Madras delivered an expert talk titled “John and Jane and their Ethnographic Counterparts: How to write about Indian call centre workers” on November 21, 2019. The talk was attended by SIAS students and faculty and GSB students. Dr Krishnamurthy is also the author of the book “1-800-Worlds: The Making of the Indian Call Centre Economy”.

She spoke about her research on call centres in Pune, Maharashtra for her PhD. Her talk was based on the entrance of call centres in India and sudden job opportunities for the youth. The debunking of the exploitation of the call centre workers was one of the main points of her lecture. She also spoke about her personal experience of working as a trainer at the call centre and gave us students valuable insights into the world of call centres in India.

Her talk was titled from the movie “John and Jane” by Ashim Ahluwalia and how that connects to her book and research. She connected ethnography and the film to her research.

The last 30 minutes of the talk was spent answering questions from students and faculty - this gave the students an opportunity to interact and converse with Dr Krishnamurthy.
