Professor Hilal Ahmed works on Indian democracy, political Islam, and politics of symbols in South Asia. His first book, Muslim Political Discourse in Postcolonial India: Monuments, Memory, Contestation (Routledge, 2014), explores these thematic concerns and develops an interdisciplinary approach to studying Indian democracy from the vantage point of Muslim politics. His later works, including A Brief History of the Present: Muslims in New India (Penguin, 2024), Allah Naam ki Siyasat (Hindi, Setu, 2023), Siyasi Muslims: A Story of Political Islam in India (Penguin Random House, 2019), and Democratic Accommodations: Minorities in Contemporary India (Bloomsbury, 2019) make a modest attempt to explain the discursively constituted nature of contemporary political discourse in India. He has also edited Companion to Indian Democracy: Resilience, Fragility, Ambivalence (Routledge, 2021), Rethinking Muslim Personal Law: Issues, Debates and Reforms (Routledge, 2022), and Sudipta Kaviraj: A Reader (Hindi, Setu, 2023).
Professor Ahmed was one of the Principal Investigators for the project Rethinking Affirmative Action for Muslims in Contemporary India (USIPI-CDPP, 2025). His academic appointments and fellowships include Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI), University of Pennsylvania (2024); Visiting Professor at Krea University (2021–22); Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies-Nantes (IAS_Nantes), France (2018–19); Visiting Professor at Ashoka University (2016); Visiting Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington (2013–14); Visiting Asia Fellow at the University of Dhaka (2011); and Visiting Professor at the University of Pune (2011).
Professor Ahmed has also produced two documentaries, Encountering the Political Jama Masjid (English, 2006) and Qutub: Ek Adhura Afsana (Qutub: An Unfinished Story, Hindi with English subtitles, 2016). In addition, Beacons of Hope (English, 2008), a film commissioned by the Ford Foundation, documents his life story. He will be based out of Sri City.
