Programme Overview

The Creative Writing minor at Krea University equips students with the skills to become versatile writers capable of navigating a rapidly evolving publishing landscape. Through lectures, workshops, tutorials, and close engagement with contemporary literary practice, students explore multiple genres including fiction, poetry, screenwriting, drama, and literary non-fiction.

The programme emphasises both specialisation and cross-genre experimentation, enabling students to develop a substantial portfolio of original creative work while gaining exposure to publishing professionals, literary agents, editors, and established writers.

By building on Krea’s existing strengths in literature and writing pedagogy, the minor offers one of the most comprehensive undergraduate pathways in Creative Writing in India.

What makes Creative Writing at Krea unique

Creative Writing at Krea University has been imagined as a pathway for students to become accomplished writers skilled at working across genres. Students who specialise in prose fiction, for instance, will learn to write and appreciate poetry, screenwriting, and non-fiction reportage. Students engage with classical and contemporary texts, learning how to read as writers. They also receive detailed feedback from professors and peers in a workshop-centred curriculum. All Creative Writing students are expected to showcase their writing at the end of the academic year, acquainting them with the pressures of discussing their work in front of audiences.  In addition, some students are required to complete a creative capstone over the course of their final year, giving them the opportunity to graduate with a substantive body of work in the genre of their choice.

Programme Structure

Required courses

  • Introduction to Creative Writing (Prose)
  • Introduction to Poetry
  • Genre Fiction (Speculative, Historical Fiction, etc.)
  • Advanced Creative Writing (Prose)

Learning Outcomes

  • Students work in a variety of genres, such as prose, poetry, and screenwriting. Over the course of the Creative Writing minor, they will learn to draft, edit, and complete an original idea or story, in one or more of these forms. They will also learn how to produce well-considered and fully-realised pieces under strict deadlines.
  • One emphasis of the programme is learning how to read like writers: this entails building the ability to give deep attention to texts, noticing specific aspects of writing, such as narrative, setting, style, and so on. Students should prepare to read extensively in the programme. We also expect each student to give balanced feedback to their peers, which is vital to improving their own craft.
  • Students have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the workings of the publishing industry. They will also learn the art of giving readings and discussing their work in public.

Assessment Methods

Classes in the Creative Writing minor are generally capped and taught in workshop format, with emphasis on discussion, critique, deep reading, and regular tutorials with professors. Students are expected to read and write extensively and are evaluated on originality, the drafting and redrafting process, and the ability to engage with the work of their colleagues in workshops.
