International Panelists

Susanna is an infectious diseases clinician and Associate Professor in Tropical Medicine at the University of Oxford, undertaking research to understand the human immune response to COVID-19 and to neglected tropical diseases including scrub typhus and melioidosis. She spent four years living in Thailand and has ongoing research collaborations in Thailand, India and Bangladesh. In Oxford her research laboratory focuses on understanding why people with diabetes get more severe infections. She was recently awarded a Hamied Foundation / Academy of Medical Sciences Visiting Professorship to India, and is an Honorary Consultant in Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where she is Travel Health Lead and runs the University’s travel clinic. This year she has spent two months working with patients with COVID-19 in the hospital.

Fellow at The George Institute for Global Health, University of Oxford, and the President of the International Society of Nephrology, Prof. Vivekananda Jha has worked with many organisations including WHO to develop clinical practice guidelines and advocacy papers, has lectured extensively around the world, and is a prolific writer and editor. Professor Jha has wide-ranging research interests, including understanding the health and societal impact of kidney diseases around the world and development of affordable, scalable and sustainable primary and secondary prevention tools.

Stephen has a PhD in International Development and Food Policy, an MSc in Rural Development as well as a Higher Diploma in Co-operative Organisation, Food Marketing and Rural Development and BSc in Agriculture and Economics. His research interests are the economics of agri-food markets, trade and food policy, economics of climate change and sustainable development, biofuels and bioenergy, food and nutrition security, market information systems and sustainable food systems, including ethical agri-food standards and certification systems. He has led many development projects around the world, including those commissioned by the European Commission, World Bank, Development Banks, national governments, trade associations and NGOs. He was formerly Director and Senior Economist at the UK Cereal Authority where he advised the UK government and agri-food industry on agri-food market and policy issues.

Richard Follett oversees University of Sussex's international strategy, developing a global network of education partnerships and research collaborations. A Professor of American History and a specialist on the history of slavery and emancipation in the United States and Caribbean, Follett enjoys a strong international reputation for his scholarship and public engagement work. An accomplished university administrator and educator, Follett has more than a decade of senior university leadership experience, particularly in the field of international education. He speaks several languages, including Spanish (fluently) and has extensive experience of international education in the Americas, Africa, Middle East, South and South-East Asia, and China.

Vaibhav Chowdhary heads the strategy, operations and business development for Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) India. Vaibhav is the former “National Energy Adviser” to the Government of United Kingdom (UK) wherein he was leading the UK – India bilateral relationship on Energy. Prior to working with the government of UK / DFID, Vaibhav worked as a Management Consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy team. Vaibhav is a Certified Energy Auditor of the Government of India and has authored various energy and environment publications in India and abroad.

Fiona Barker is Senior Lecturer in Comparative Politics. Her research and teaching interests focus on nationalism, immigration, multinational societies, representation, identity politics, and the governance of diversity in contemporary democracies. She has presented and published on the politics of immigration and integration in multinational, multilevel societies in Europe and North America, as well as on immigration policies, national identity and electoral reform in New Zealand. She has been a visiting fellow at various institutions, including the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin, CERI-Sciences Po Paris, Université Québec à Montréal, and the University of Edinburgh.

Dr Williams currently oversees all developments in the Psychology Department relating to Internationalisation (e.g. staff and student exchange, international student recruitment and marketing courses to an international market) and Employability (e.g. students on placements, integrating employability into the curriculum, and providing work-based/work-relevant experiences for all Psychology students). Dr Williams has experience of working in the National Health Service as a Research Officer and also a Research & Development and Clinical Audit Deputy Manager. He has been involved in provision of training & education of qualified and trainee health professionals for many years through various teaching positions.

Jessica has worked as a researcher, strategist, and leader on institutional design initiatives for more than two decades in the United States, Latin America, and South Asia. Her work focuses on the interaction between technology change and institutional environments to identify and seize new opportunities for solving complex social challenges. She is particularly interested in ways in which innovations in how we detect and process information shape the risks and opportunities for responding to environmental change. Jessica was most recently Director of Integrated Urban Strategy at World Resources Institute (WRI), where she continues to serve as Global Lead for WRI’s air quality work. Prior to joining WRI, she founded and led Okapi, an institutional design and strategy consultancy incubated by IIT Madras. Jessica earned her Ph.D. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business and her B.A. from Harvard University.

Scientia professor Jill Bennett is an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, where she leads fEEL (feltExperience & Empathy Lab), bringing together psychologists, creative practitioners and community collaborators to study subjective experiences of mental/emotional health and trauma, and to develop new forms of community-based, psychosocial support. She is Founding Director of the National Institute for Experimental Arts, and Founding Director of The Big Anxiety - festival of people + art + science, which was awarded Best New Event at the Australian Event Awards in 2018. Jill is a writer, curator and immersive media producer, whose work includes arts-science collaborations, at the intersection of trauma studies, psychology and mental health, and the design of public engagement.

Kate McMillan is an Associate Professor in Comparative Politics and the Head of Programme for Political Science and International Relations. Her recent publications and current research projects focus on the intersection between immigration politics and electoral politics in New Zealand, media politics in New Zealand, and the politics of asylum-seeking and forced migration in South East Asian nations. Kate is the immediate Past President of the New Zealand Political Studies Association.

Dilip M Menon is the Mellon Chair of Indian Studies and the Director of the Centre for Indian Studies in Africa at the University of Witwatersrand. He was educated at the Universities of Delhi, Oxford and Cambridge and got his PhD degree from Cambridge. He is a translator from the Malayalam and writes on film, theatre and literature. Currently, he is working on issues of cultural and intellectual history and is engaged in a project on the writing of history in India between 1850 and 1960. The work inaugurated at the Centre is interdisciplinary and transnational in approach and looks afresh at issues of knowledge, modernity and migration in the Global South. He has recently edited Capitalisms: Towards a Global History (Oxford: 2020) and another edited volume titled Concepts from the Global South is forthcoming from Oxford in 2021.

Srajana Kaikini received her PhD in Philosophy from the Manipal Centre for Humanities, Manipal University in 2019. She did her curatorial studies at de Appel’s Curatorial Programme 2012-13, Amsterdam. She has been the recipient of the FICA Research Fellowship 2013-14, the CIMAM Travel Grant 2018, the Ffai Research Grant 2018, ISCP-Inlaks Grant 2019 and has been in residency at Delfina Foundation (London) and ISCP (New York). She was the collections curator at the K K Hebbar Gallery and Arts Centre (2016-2019). Her latest independent curatorial works include Backstage of Biology at Archives at National Centre for Biological Sciences (2019) and Vectors of Kinship (2016) at 11th Shanghai Biennale. Her research interests include aesthetics, curatorial studies, arts pedagogy, kinship and relations, philosophy of language, philosophy of art, image, cinema and space.

Soumya Kapoor leads IWWAGE’s efforts to generate, leverage, and synthesize evidence on women’s economic empowerment. Soumya has an experience of nearly 18 years in the development sector, spanning research around gender, women’s empowerment, poverty reduction strategies, social inclusion challenges and policy levers to alleviate them around the world. She has worked as an independent policy advisor for the World Bank, UNICEF, the Government of India, the Centre for Policy Research and the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), helping these institutions mainstream inclusion and gender issues in their research and projects ranging from investments in women’s collectives (NRLM), to sectors such as water, agriculture, infrastructure, urban development and environment and climate change.

Shailender Swaminathan provides strategic and thought leadership to shape LEAD’s research direction and agenda. Shailender (PhD Economics, University of Southern California, 2001) is also an Adjunct faculty member in Brown University’s Department of Health Policy and an Investigator at the Providence Veterans Administration (VA). He has previously held academic and research positions at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and Brown University. Upon his return to India, he initially worked at the Public Health Foundation of India. His broad research interests are in the formulation and application of credible research designs to examine questions of relevance to public policy. In recent work, he is interested in understanding the knock-on effects of Covid on health systems.
Shailender Swaminathan

Naina Manjrekar received her PhD in History from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London in 2018. Her doctoral research explored the political worlds of South Asian lascar seamen in the late colonial period who worked on transcontinental ships. Her research lies at the intersection of histories of migration, labour, anti-colonialism and cosmopolitanism. In the course of her PhD, she secured scholarships from the Inlaks Foundation, the Charles Wallace India Trust and the Institute of New Economic Thinking (Harvard and Cambridge). Naina was Caird Fellow at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, UK, where she studied colonial cooks working on British passenger ships before Second World War. She has previously taught courses in South Asian history, historical methodology and urban history at SOAS, and designed a course on colonial subalterns in the World Wars.

Kshitij Amodekar is an experienced sustainability leader and architect with over 13 years of work experience in the built environment leading teams and projects ranging from Urban Sustainability Plans through to Zero energy buildings and Corporate Sustainability Policy. He has expertise in climate resilient design for buildings, master plans and cities. Kshitij has multidisciplinary experience with projects across the world like Wuxi Housing (China), Grayling well Masterplan, UK (Zero Carbon Housing), Dubai Green Building Guidelines and Masdar (Abu Dhabi). He was associated with organizations like SEED engineering consultants Pvt Ltd, Arca Verde Pvt Ltd, Vigor Renewables and WSP Environment and Energy. He is also NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation) accredited Trainer for “Sustainability and Green Buildings”.
Kshitij Amodekar

Kalyan Chakrabarti has research interests in the interface between biology and chemistry. He received his doctorate degree from the Indian Institute of Science, in biophysics with specialisation in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy of proteins. He held research positions in the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (Göttingen, Germany), the National Cancer Institute (in the National Institute of Health, USA) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the Brandeis University, USA. His work primarily focuses on protein dynamics and he is the coordinator of an international collaboration to develop a comprehensive framework for investigating protein dynamics involving the Max Planck Institutes in Göttingen and Potsdam, FreieUniversität, Berlin in Germany, and the University of Louisville, USA.
Kalyan S Chakrabarti
Kalyan S Chakrabarti Assistant Professor of Biological Science and Chemistry, Krea University
John holds two doctorates, one in Ecological Sciences from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, and the other in the History of Science from Harvard University. Prior to Krea, John Mathew had a four-year stint in the same capacity at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, in the Humanities and Social Sciences. He has taught previously at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; the University of Massachusetts, Boston, Massachusetts; and Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. His instructional experience includes anthropology, biology, geology, history and the history of science. He is also actively researching the plague and influenza epidemics in India in the 1890s and 1918-19 respectively. John’s interests are fundamentally cross-disciplinary.

Bharath Sundaram enjoys using an interdisciplinary approach to explore and address challenges posed by the dynamism between environment and society. He completed his PhD from Manipal University and was previously an Assistant Professor of Human Ecology, School of Ecology and Environment Studies, at Nalanda University. In the past, Bharath has worked on human-elephant conflict, tiger and prey monitoring, and the socio-ecological implications of alien invasive species spread in forests. His current work includes the long-term monitoring of a social-ecological system in the Western Ghats, and a pan-Indian, data-driven project on forests, human population, and biodiversity conservation. His research has been funded by the International Foundation for Science (Sweden), International Social Science Council (France), and the National Geographic Society (USA).
Bharath Sundaram

Bishnu N. Mohapatra is a political scientist and poet, an educator and a commentator on society, governance, policy and culture. He has a DPhil in Politics from University of Oxford, and has taught politics for more than twenty-five years at University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University and AzimPremji University. He has held visiting appointments at Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Paris, National University of Singapore, University of Kyoto, Japan, and National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. He has lectured at several universities in Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. From 2002 to 2010, he headed the governance portfolio of the Ford Foundation’s South Asia office, New Delhi.

Dr. Sunder Ramaswamy is the Vice-Chancellor of Krea University and on leave from Middlebury College, in the U.S, where he is a Distinguished College Professor of International Economics. He received his PhD in Economics from Purdue University (USA). Over the past 29 years he has held visiting positions at the Madras School of Economics (India), Vanderbilt University (USA), Institute of Financial Management and Research (India), Purdue University (USA), and the World Bank (USA). His research interests are in the areas of development economics (focus on sustainable development, technological change, and financial sector reforms), international economics (trade liberalization, trade and development issues), and applied microeconomics.

Mukund Padmanabhan was the Editor of The Hindu between March 2016 and the end of February 2019. Earlier, he was the Editor of The Hindu Business Line. Mukund is an MPhil in Philosophy and worked briefly as a lecturer in University of Delhi before switching to journalism. He is interested in and has written about politics, legal affairs, and literature. He has also worked with Sunday Magazine in Kolkata and the Indian Express in Chennai. He was an adjunct faculty of the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines, where he taught credits on media law and advanced writing to post-graduate students. He curated two festivals of theatre and music — The Hindu Theatre Fest, and The Hindu November Fest and an annual thought conclave -The Huddle, on behalf of the newspaper.

Kala has held positions as the Education lead for the South Asia region at Australian Trade Commission (Austrade), Senior Global Practice Adviser at Austrade Sydney, Director of Konnect in Singapore, among others. Kala holds a PGDBA (MBA) from SPJIMR India and a professional diploma in Digital Marketing from DMI Ireland.
