About the Workshop

This workshop will introduce participants to Digital Humanities (DH), with a particular focus on Digital History. Participants will explore the evolution of DH methods and practices over the past four decades while engaging with key debates and challenges in the field. These include questions about the status of Digital Humanities as a field, access to the resources required to undertake DH projects, the long-term sustainability of digital projects, and the importance of transparency, documentation, and accessibility.
The workshop will introduce participants to the possibilities offered by DH and encourage them to consider how digital methods can be incorporated into their own research and studies. Participants will explore and critically assess a range of DH projects, with particular attention to projects related to South Asian and American history.
The workshop will also provide an introduction to several commonly used DH tools and methods, including Geographical Information Systems (GIS), data visualization using Tableau, and web publishing through platforms such as GitHub Pages. Participants will encounter examples of website-based essays, online exhibitions, digital archives, and other forms of digital scholarship. Through these examples, they will gain a better understanding of how digital tools can support research, analysis, interpretation, and public engagement.
Because DH is inherently interdisciplinary, the workshop will be of interest not only to students of History but also to students working in fields such as Sociology, Literature and the Arts, Journalism, Anthropology, and related disciplines. Interdisciplinary examples will demonstrate how digital methods can open up new ways of asking questions, presenting evidence, analyzing sources, and communicating research.
