Position Title: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Department: Finance

Reports To: Vice Chancellor

Position Type: Full-Time

Position Overview:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the university. The CFO plays a pivotal role in the strategic planning, financial management, and long-term financial sustainability of the institution. This includes budget development, financial reporting, investment management, financial risk management, and ensuring compliance with all financial regulations. The CFO works closely with other senior leaders to support the university’s mission and goals, ensuring that financial resources are effectively aligned with the university’s academic and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Financial Leadership:

Develop and implement the university’s financial strategy in alignment with its mission, vision, and strategic goals.

Advise the Vice Chancellor on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, and policy matters.

Participate in the university’s strategic planning process, providing financial analysis and guidance on long-term financial planning.

Financial Planning and Analysis:

Lead the preparation and presentation of the annual budget, working closely with department heads to ensure alignment with institutional priorities.

Oversee the development of multi-year financial forecasts and scenario planning.

Conduct financial analysis and modeling to support decision-making, including analysis of potential new programs, initiatives, and capital projects.

Budget Management:

Oversee the management and monitoring of the university’s operating and capital budgets.

Ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial information to internal and external stakeholders.

Work with academic and function heads to ensure budgetary discipline and the effective allocation of resources.

Financial Reporting and Compliance:

Ensure that all financial reporting is accurate, timely, and in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and accounting standards.

Oversee the preparation of financial statements, including the annual audited financial report.

Manage relationships with external auditors, regulatory bodies, and financial institutions.

Investment Management:

Manage the university’s investment portfolio, taking guidance from the Vice Chancellor and the Audit Committee to maximize returns while managing risk.

Oversee the university’s endowment funds, ensuring compliance with donor intent and legal requirements.

Provide regular reports on investment performance and make recommendations for investment strategy adjustments.

Risk Management and Internal Controls:

Develop and oversee the university’s financial risk management strategies, including insurance, debt management, and contingency planning.

Ensure the implementation and maintenance of effective internal controls to safeguard university assets.

Conduct periodic reviews of financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance and efficiency.

Leadership and Team Development:

Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Provide leadership in the recruitment, development, and retention of high-performing finance professionals.

Promote a collaborative and inclusive environment, working across departments to achieve the university’s financial goals.

Serve as the primary financial liaison to the Audit Committee, and other key stakeholders.

Experience:

A minimum of 10-15 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, including experience at the senior executive level in higher education or a similar non-profit environment.
