Bloomsbury India is publishing a special Centenary Edition of Uttam Kumar: A Life in Cinema by Dr Sayandeb Chowdhury, Associate Professor, Literature, SIAS. The original, a cultural history of the cinema of Uttam Kumar and how he reconstituted the visual cultural order of postcolonial Bengal, was published by Bloomsbury in 2021 to considerable critical acclaim. The forthcoming edition marks the centenary of Uttam Kumar on 3 September 2026, and includes a new foreword by the filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, new archival images, a set of newly translated essays by Satyajit Ray and Sharmila Tagore among others, and a new look.
The book will be available by the end of September 2026.
