Dr Joya John’s article in Journal of World Literature

Authored by Dr Joya John, Assistant Professor, Literature, SIAS, an article titled Multilingualism, Literary Ecologies and the Scales of Environmental World Literature has been published in the Journal of World Literature.

About the Article

What does it mean to read environmental literature from India as world literature? This essay examines three contemporary Indian novels to explore how ideas about the environment are shaped not only by the places and ecological crises they depict, but also by the multilingual literary worlds in which they are written and read. The essay argues for a more grounded approach to environmental world literature—one that pays attention to the relationships between languages, regions, and literary traditions, rather than focusing only on texts that circulate globally. It also considers how translation changes the ways environmental knowledge travels between local and global contexts.
