Managing Hopelessness with Hope Through Immersive Storytelling – Instances from Indic Texts and Practices

(Sathyanarayanan Ramachandran, Associate Professor of Marketing, IFMR Graduate School of Business, Krea University)

Historically, there has been a lot of research done around the concept of hope. For someone in distress, providing support to cope with the situation with strong words of hope is an important part of human activity in relationships, and the interventions range from a basic pep-talk to counselling and psychotherapy. Self-help books were trying to address this through tools like storytelling. In the western world, there are several self-help books like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, Tough Times Never Last but Tough People Do and so on, that are aimed at people who need stories of hope during their times of distress. These best-selling books cover positive stories related to a range of topics like love, parenting, death and so on. This paper delves into some of the traditional Indic practices of providing hope during a state of distress. This will have managerial implications in Human Resource Management (Organizational Behaviour) and Marketing (Consumer Behaviour).

Design Thinking View on an Affordable Public Bike-Sharing Project from India

(Sathyanarayanan Ramachandran, Associate Professor of Marketing, IFMR Graduate School of Business, Krea University)

Bikes of Bijnor is an intuitive design-thinking work by an Indian administrative service officer aimed at public bike-sharing. The project was a Government officer’s out-of-the-box thinking idea with empathy to use hundreds of leftover bicycles of migrant labourers during the COVID-19 lockdown towards affordable and sustainable bike-sharing in the Indian town of Bijnor after compensating them.

The protagonist took measures to locate at least 100 owners of the leftover bicycles, compensate them, refit their cycles, and use those cycles to create an affordable city bike-sharing system.

This case study documents the intervention through the lens of design thinking and analyzes the impact on Health, Society, and Public Good. Frugal innovation through the Bikes of Bijnor project had a positive effect on public health by promoting cycling as a healthy lifestyle activity, had inclusion as a significant goal by making the use of services affordable for all sections of society and also contributed significantly towards sustainability as a substitute for carbon-emitting vehicles.

A version of this paper has been accepted for presentation during the Academic Design Management Conference at Delft, Netherlands in Aug 2024.

Sayantan Datta, Assistant Professor of Practice at the Centre for Writing and Pedagogy (CWP), Krea University has co-authored a book chapter titled Trials & Tribulations of LGBTQ+ People at Work as Barriers to Their Job Satisfaction: A Minority Stress Theory Perspective. This chapter, co-authored with Professor Uma Warrier, Professor at the Centre for Management Studies, Jain University, and Gouri Priya, Clinical Counselor at Workplace Options, has been published in the book Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Creating Value Based Sustainable Organizations (Routledge, 2024).

In their peer-reviewed book chapter, Warrier, Priya and Datta draw upon their collaborative qualitative study that used semi-structured interviews with 32 queer and transgender participants to identify unique stressors that individuals from these minority groups encounter at the workplace. The findings of the study also emphasize the need for targeted interventions that could help people with diverse genders and sexualities to manage their ‘minority stress’ and improve their job satisfaction. The authors first presented their paper in a conference earlier this year at the University of Hyderabad.

Jyothis Maria Franklin, PhD student, IFMR GSB presented a research paper

Jyothis Maria Franklin, PhD Student, IFMR GSB, Krea University presented a research paper at the Management Education and Research Colloquium (MERC) 2024 by the Indian Institute of Management, Kashipur between 31 May, 2024 – 1 June, 2024. The title of the paper is Investigating Consumer Awareness of Deceptive Advertisements Cited by Regulatory Institutions.

Abstract of the paper: Despite numerous regulatory frameworks in the domain of advertising ethics, there is still a knowledge gap on how consumers recognize and respond to advertisements that have been subject to court orders for deception. The primary objective of the study is to find out the perceptions of consumers on the advertisements that are particularly referenced in court orders for deceiving and misleading them. It is expected that consumers who are aware of deceptive and misleading strategies are more likely to approach advertisements with caution and thus scrutinize the credibility and trust of the claims made by advertisers.

Professor Jayaram Ramakrishnan co-authors a book titled “Enterprise Performance & Risk Management for MSMEs – A Primer” for ICMAI

Professor Jayaram Ramakrishnan co-authors a book titled “Enterprise Performance & Risk Management for MSMEs – A Primer” for ICMAI

Professor Jayaram Ramakrishnan, Professor of Practice at IFMR GSB, Krea University, has co-authored a book titled Enterprise Performance & Risk Management for MSMEs – A Primer for the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), with CMA Venkataramani, a serial entrepreneur and member of the MSME Board of ICMAI. The book was released at the 61st National Cost & Management Accountants convention of ICMAI held at Kevadia, Gujarat, in the last week of June, 2024.

The book deals with development of a Management Accounting framework for MSMEs. This was motivated by the existing low uptake and inconsistent use of Management Accounting Practices by MSMEs as observed and suggested by prior research in an Indian context. MSMEs were often found failing to leverage adequately the potential of management accounting for helping them achieve their financial objectives (primarily profitability and liquidity) while also adequately insuring against risks. According to the authors, the book is a humble attempt to provide MSMEs with a cost management and risk mitigation toolkit which would be easy to roll out and sustain in the long run.
