Nurturing mental well-being for a seamless transition to University life
Message from the Outreach Director Arpit Solanki, Director, Admissions and Outreach, Krea University
With considerable experience in Higher Education Admissions, I have had the privilege of interacting with many students across India. One of the most pressing concerns I encounter is the mental and emotional well-being of students, especially during their transition from school to university. This phase brings significant academic, social and emotional changes, making mental health a crucial factor in ensuring a smooth and successful journey into higher education and beyond.

Small steps
Schools play a vital role in shaping a student’s mindset, resilience and emotional intelligence. A supportive school environment that encourages open discussions about stress, failure and career choices helps students build confidence and adaptability. Teachers and counsellors who guide students toward exploring multiple pathways — rather than adhering to rigid definitions of success — create a more inclusive and growth-oriented learning experience.
Beyond grades
I recall mentoring a student in 2013 who had scored only 50% in his 10th grade exams. He was deeply discouraged, struggling with self-doubt and societal pressure. However, with the right support from faculty and his parents, he pursued a technical course — one that, based solely on his academic record, may not have seemed like the obvious choice. Over the years, he developed expertise in cloud technology and is now thriving in a reputed IT firm. His journey is a testament to how resilience, coupled with the right academic and emotional guidance, can lead to a successful and fulfilling career.
Resources on hand
A decade ago, schools and universities had limited resources to support students’ mental well-being and faculty members often served as the primary source of counselling. Today, with dedicated mental health resources available at both school and university levels, we have the opportunity to support countless students and create many more success stories.
At Krea University, we emphasise holistic development, ensuring that students are not only academically prepared but also emotionally equipped to navigate the challenges of university life. Schools must continue to take an active role in nurturing students’ mental well-being, empowering them to transition into confident and capable individuals ready to embrace their future.
