A Talk on ‘Beyond the Headlines: AI’s Hidden Frontier’ by Tyler Peppel

ABOUT THE TALK
This lecture will focus on lesser-known, thought-provoking aspects of AI that are not typically addressed in mainstream discussions, but have the potential for profound transformation of global society and culture.
Three trends will be discussed:
1. Intelligence on Demand: The implications of intelligence as a utility, provided for the common good, much like fresh water, electricity, and internet access are available today.
2. Hyperabundance: The potential for AI to drive economic disruption in ways that shift the economic balance of power in the production of commonplace goods and services.
3. Agentic AI: The rise of AI-driven agents capable of organizing and performing complex tasks without human intervention.
These transformations are actively underway, but rarely discussed in general interest media. The presentation will provide an opportunity for us to ground these concepts within the present and provide a framework for thinking about the implications for our future life and culture.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tyler Peppel is an entrepreneur, educator and researcher currently working with a number of teams and projects aimed at helping society through artificial intelligence technologies. He received his Master’s from the Media Lab at MIT, where his research focused on the transition from analog to digital media and the ways digital technologies influence how we make and share messages. From MIT he moved to Apple, where he spent five years leading a new product team tasked with evolving the Macintosh operating system from support of static text and still images to dynamic streaming of interactive video, audio, and animation. These capabilities enabled new “media rich” applications like video editing, music production, and interactive learning. Tyler is now a faculty member at New York University, leading research and teaching about the impact of AI on communication. He also serves as the CEO of Tickr, a startup building AI software tools and advising organizations on beneficial uses of AI.
