The Master of Business Administration [MBA] programme was born in the USA.
In the USA, the MBA is a channel for those already employed in Junior Management for three or more years to move into Middle Management or across functions, domains, or geographies. However, in India, half the MBA cohort does not have any prior work experience;
Yet, we in India have adopted the American curriculum.
Such adoption directly affects the MBA’s fit with the organisation.
Recruiters across campuses report that 75% of MBAs without prior work experience quit their first job within the first year. In contrast, this figure [first-year attrition rate] is only 25% for those with two years of experience before their MBA.
Research shows that such high attrition among MBAs without prior work experience is traceable to the culture shock upon moving from the college campus to the work environment. [Incidentally, this also takes place among graduates fresh out of engineering college]
While training to be a Physician, [medical college] students undergo pre-clinical and para-clinical courses in their classrooms and laboratories. From their 3rd year onward, they undertake clinical practice in departments such as General Medicine, Surgery, and Paediatrics. Therefore, medical students do not experience such culture shock.
Indeed, this practice is common in professions like law and chartered accountancy.
Hence, there is a need for a four- to five-year program to train students in business management that combines classroom instruction, laboratory work, internships, and applied projects.
The Integrated Program in [Business] Management fulfils these needs.
Originally, IFMR stood for the Institute for Financial Management and Research.
While we have expanded our scope [beyond Finance] to all management functions, we retain our thrust on research.
So, when we decided to launch our integrated programme, we conducted extensive research to identify gaps in MBA curricula in India. Toward this end, we surveyed businesspersons and our alums [from our first 10 batches].
We discussed the survey results in our faculty council and then articulated the expectations of businesspersons and alums regarding specific aspects of knowledge, information, skills, attitudes, and values.
We also benchmarked the top 10 undergraduate business programmes in the USA.
Considering the two above, we developed the curriculum for our integrated programme, comprising a bachelor’s component and a master’s component, as well as multiple internships and application projects.
Our programme is eclectic and draws on other disciplines such as law, philosophy, science, and public administration. We draw upon faculty resources from our sister organisation, the School of Interwoven Arts and Sciences.
Thus, our integrated programme is unique and offers superior value for your time, effort, and money.
