Professor Pulapre Balakrishnan was educated at Moscow, Madras, and Jawaharlal Nehru University, and later trained as an economist at Oxford and Cambridge. An applied economist, his work focuses on macroeconomics and development. Prof Balakrishnan is well-known for his books, including Pricing and Inflation in India (OUP India, 1991), Economic Growth in India: History and Prospect (OUP India, 2010), and India’s Economy from Nehru to Modi: A Brief History (Permanent Black, 2022). He has held academic positions at Oxford University, the Indian Statistical Institute in Delhi, the Indian Institute of Management in Kozhikode, and Ashoka University in Sonipat. Additionally, he has served as the Country Economist for Ukraine at the World Bank and as the Director of the Centre for Development Studies in Thiruvananthapuram. Prof Balakrishnan has also been a consultant to the International Labour Organisation, the Reserve Bank of India, and the United Nations Development Program. He is currently an Honorary Visiting Professor at the Centre for Development Studies.
