Central to our vision is a student who learns to read deeply, sensitive to contexts and histories that are both immediate and more distant in time and place. The Literature major will read texts in global Englishes, past and present; think through the aesthetics and politics of literatures in translation, asking what these literatures bring to readers of English and other languages; and engage with the role of technology and new media in the evolution of literary form and practice.
Krea’s Literature major has been designed with principles of decolonisation as praxis, not merely as theory. The programme explores the global interconnectedness of literary methods, genres, movements, technologies, and theories, while creating opportunities to question and move beyond literatures in English, explore texts in translation, and fundamentally rethink what literature is. Our course offerings in creative writing, translation, and visual culture emphasise the interwovenness of literary study with practice, giving majors a comprehensive education in the humanities.
Our required courses introduce students to the modes and methods of literary analysis and interpretation, as well as to the diverse forms, genres, and movements that constitute the material of literary study. Students are encouraged to reflect critically on their role as readers and writers: to inquire into processes of canon formation, and to engage thoughtfully with the circulation and transmission of aesthetic, expressive, and intellectual objects across and within cultural contexts. Our pedagogy emphasises active learning, with opportunities to work independently on topics of individual interest, as well as immersive experiences that include meetings with writers, translators, journalists, editors, and publishers.
