What do we Do?

The Nature Walk Committee is a faculty-led initiative committed to promoting sustainability, environmental awareness, and deeper engagement with nature within the IFMR community.

Objective
Our primary objective is to address key sustainability challenges that impact the environment, society, and economy. We focus on the following critical areas:
  1. Biodiversity Loss: Tackling issues such as habitat destruction, overexploitation, and human-wildlife conflict that threaten species survival and degrade ecosystems.
  2. Pollution: Addressing air, water, and soil pollution resulting from industrial activities, agricultural practices, and inadequate waste management—each of which harms human health and the natural environment.
  3. Renewable Energy Sources: Promoting the adoption of sustainable and renewable energy alternatives to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
  4. Healthy Food Systems: Exploring sustainable agricultural practices that support nutritious and eco-friendly food production.
  5. Waste Management: Developing strategies for effective waste reduction, recycling, and disposal to minimize environmental impact.
  6. Climate Change: Studying the causes of climate change and implementing measures to combat its effects.
  7. Water Scarcity: Addressing challenges related to unequal access to clean water for drinking, sanitation, and agriculture—issues intensified by climate change and pollution.

Our Activities

Biodiversity Walks
We organize nature walks on the Krea campus and at other ecological hotspots with a focus on:
  • Flora Identification: Identifying local plant and tree species, understanding their ecological roles and benefits. We also participate in tree-planting initiatives as opportunities arise.
  • Birdwatching: Observing, identifying, and recording bird species. Sightings are uploaded to platforms such as eBird, contributing to global research databases.
  • Insect Observation: Studying butterflies and other insects, which serve as vital bioindicators. Observations are documented on platforms like iNaturalist to support scientific research.
Visits to Agricultural Lands
  • Observe crop cultivation techniques, animal husbandry, and agricultural technologies.
  • Engage with farmers to understand their experiences, challenges, and practices.
Visits to Industries
  • Explore the types of energy sources utilized in industrial settings.
  • Study the implementation of environmentally friendly and sustainable practices within industries.
Seminars and Expert TalksWe organize seminars and invite experts to share best practices in sustainability. These sessions aim to raise awareness, educate the community, and encourage the adoption of sustainable behaviors.
