ABOUT THE TALK
This year’s Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and Derek Robinson for their work on the relationship between economic progress and institutions. In this talk, Pulapre Balakrishan will present and assess the methodology they used to reach their conclusions and evaluate the content of their findings.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Pulapre Balakrishnan
Pulapre Balakrishnan is an applied economist. He has worked in the fields of macroeconomics and development. Although his work has been published in professional journals, he is perhaps better known for his books Pricing and Inflation in India (OUP India, 1991), Economic Growth in India: History and Prospect (OUP India, 2010), and India’s Economy from Nehru to Modi: A Brief History (Permanent Black, 2022).
He has held appointments at Oxford University, the Indian Statistical Institute, the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, and Ashoka University. He served as the Country Economist for Ukraine at the World Bank, as Director of the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, and as a consultant to the International Labour Organisation, the Reserve Bank of India, and UNDP. His contributions to public discourse on India’s economy include over three decades of popular writing in the media.
